How to help a Struggling Student
* Help the student to organize himself:
* Create an office for them (everything the student
could possibly need to complete an assignment should be located here-
pens, pencils, pencil sharpener, stapler, paper, etc.).
* Color code things for them (put colored covers on
books which correspond with the folder for that class- red cover on
math book, red folder for math).
* Use boxes, shoe boxes, dividers- anything to help them stay organized.
* Make use of highlighters, colored paper clips,
post-it's.... Make sure you show the student how to best use these
tools.
* A student with a learning disability will not be able to organize independently- THEY WILL NEED YOUR HELP.
* Make the lesson interesting. Tailor the lesson to focus on students' interests.
* Use short instructional periods/ take frequent breaks.
* Break tasks down into smaller components.
* Teach students how to keep an assignment notebook.
This can be any size/shape/color/etc. Inside should be spaces for the
student to record the date the assignment was given, the assignment,
materials needed to complete the assignment, and the due date. As soon
the student completes the assignment, she marks it off the list.
* Teach students how to review their assignments, looking for simple errors.
* Keep instructions short and simple.
* Parents and teachers need to work together and communicate often.
* Send rested children to school- a tired child will not function to their optimum ability.
* Have students monitor their own achievement (keep a chart/list of grades, etc.).
