The History of Morton
In 1884 the residents of Lexington voted for a $13,000 bond and received land donated by Union Pacific Railroad. The concern over children from the south section of town crossing the railroad tracks provided for $600 that was raised to build an elementary school in this area. In 1888 a small building was erected for students in grades one through three one block south of the current building. The new "South Side School" was built in 1911 and was located at the current building site. It had 100 students in grades one through four. Later, grades five and six were added.
As the town grew, so did the school. In 1950 a large renovation project was completed. Many rooms were added. The school's name was changed to Morton Elementary School. In 1960 four more classrooms were added and enrollment grew to 220 students.
With the arrival of IBP, a beef processing facility, Lexington experienced a population explosion in 1990-91. Plans for a new Morton Elementary School were drawn. At a cost of $1,375,000, Morton was totally remodeled around the existing multipurpose gymnasium and two classrooms. Morton School took on an entirely new facade as aesthetically pleasing on the inside, as well as, the outside. A large open foyer with skylight was added, creating a bright and inviting space to accommodate small assemblies, instructional groupings and quiet reading. The addition created 12 new classrooms, as well as a library and office space.
In 1998, with the renovation of the Lexington Middle School, sixth grade students of Lexington began attending at the Middle School site. Still, need for classrooms and special program space remained great and in 1999, four classrooms were added in two modular units. In 2004 another modular unit was added with two additional classrooms and again in 2005 one more modular unit was added to provide yet two more classrooms.
Today, Morton Elementary houses 370 students, 25 certified staff members, and 14 paraprofessionals and support personnel.
