Something that a 15 year old girl risked her life for!
The Real Short Story:
Mildred Sorensen attended the Lexington High School (now the Lexington
Middle School). She was a Girl Scout and a Basketball player. One
day she seen the American Flag flying after dark. The Flag shouldn't be
flying she said. So she thought that it would be a scout's job to take
it down. She grabbed a hammer and started to climb the scaffolding. At
first she couldn't get it so she climbed down and went and got an ax.
She finally got the flag down and threw it to her scouts and then
tossed the ax on the ground. Then she began to climb down and one of
the steps was loose and she fell down about 40 feet. She died with a
smile knowing that the flag was safe.
Rumors:
Some Students swear that if you go to the Middle School on Halloween
Night you can see the whole reenactment of Mildred's scene. Some say
that if you walk around the school you can see lights flickering on and
off and her face will appear by the window of her death. One student
said that when she was passing by the lobby she looked into the TV from
the cameras and seen Mildred walking beside her and turn to the third
floor. A teacher said that he was the only teacher left in the school
and he was in the auditorium and heard giggles and the lights
flickering and he shouted, "Stop It" and then everything stopped and he
left. If you walk into the bathroom on the 3rd floor alone they say
that Mildred will take over your body (guaranteed not to be true). They
say that on the 4th floor of the Middle School is where Mildred haunts
the most. The 4th floor is supposed to be a storage room.
This ribbon was given to Mildred in honor of her teachers, girl scout members.
