School and Community Description
Lexington High School serves 743 students in grades 9-12
in Lexington, Nebraska. It is part of a district that serves
2,526 students. There are also 4 elementary schools (K-5) and one
middle school (6-8). An early learning center located at Tyson
Fresh Meats provides services to children ages 3 to pre-kindergarten.
The school and community value and celebrate its
ethnic diversity. According to the 2000 census, 3,424 of the
community's 10,011 residents were born in a country other than the
United States. Many of those who live and work in Lexington as
2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation Americans are reminded by the presence of
these new Americans of the struggles and hopes their own families
experienced as first generation arrivals to a new place..
Across the school district, twenty-five per cent of
our students are White not Hispanic, 73% Hispanic, with the other 2%
being Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native and Black
not Hispanic. Seventy-one percent of our students receive free
and reduced lunches and our mobility rate stands at 41%.
Twenty-seven percent of our students are English Language Learners. (Data - Spring2005)
Lexington is located 221 miles west of Omaha in
south central Nebraska, north of Interstate 80 and on Highway 30.
Within this agriculturally based community, there are 11 manufacturing
plants, all of them non-union, employing 2,759. The largest
employer is Tyson Fresh Meats with a work force of 2,450.
Lexington has numerous recreational opportunities
that continue to be expanded. Not only is Johnson Lake
Recreational Area less than 10 minutes away, facilities within
Lexington are constantly upgraded. Within in the last 10 years a
new aquatic center has been built and expanded. A 35 acre complex
for soccer, baseball, and softball was built, six new tennis courts
were added, and existing parks continue to be renovated and made
larger.
A visible sign of the community's commitment to the
value of literacy and equal access to information for all people is the
construction of a new 20,000 square foot public library. It opened in November 2005.
